Events in The Algarve
Feast of Saint Anthony (June 13th 2026)
Celebrated across the Algarve, especially in smaller towns such as Tavira and Olhao, the Feast of St. Anthony is a lively local tradition. Expect colourful processions, street parties, folk music, dancing, and grilled sardines, as communities come together to honour the patron saint of marriage and Lisbon-born St. Anthony.
Afro Nation Portugal (3 – 5 July 2026)
Held at Praia da Rocha in Portimão, this is the sixth edition of the AfroBeats / African-culture festival in the Algarve, expect international headliners, multiple stages, beach-backdrop parties and a festive atmosphere that blends music, culture and summer holiday vibes.
Portugal Invitation – PGA TOUR Champions (31 July – 2 Aug)
This landmark event marks the first PGA TOUR Champions individual stroke-play tournament in Portugal. Set at The Els Club Vilamoura, a course designed by Ernie Els and formerly known as Dom Pedro Victoria, the tournament features a 78-player field, including World Golf Hall of Famers and major champions, competing for a $3 million purse.
Fisherman’s Festival – Festa dos Pescadores – Albufeira (26 – 28 Sept 2026)
Celebrate Albufeira’s deep-rooted maritime heritage at the Festa dos Pescadores, held on the last weekend of September 2026 in the heart of the old town. This vibrant festival transforms Praça dos Pescadores into a lively hub of local culture, offering visitors a chance to enjoy traditional Portuguese music, folk dances, and a variety of seafood delicacies
Getting Around
Train
There is a convenient coastal train service (Linha do Algarve) that runs from Lagos in the west to Vila Real de Santo Antonio on the Spanish border, with regular stops including Portimao, Albufeira, Faro and Tavira. There is no train station at Faro Airport, you must get a taxi to Faro city.
Faro City to Albufeira – approx. 35 mins
Faro City to Lagos – approx. 1 hr 45 mins
Taxi
Taxis are widely available throughout the Algarve. You’ll find clearly marked taxi ranks in town centres, near beaches, and at transport hubs. Your accommodation can also arrange one for you if needed. At Faro Airport, taxis operate from the official rank outside the arrivals hall, with all vehicles using meters and displaying fare information.
Bus
The Algarve has a good network of bus services connecting Faro, the airport, and all major coastal towns and resorts. Services are operated by several companies, with frequent routes. Most resorts have a central bus station, and timetables are easy to find online or locally.
Car Hire
Car hire is widely available across the Algarve, with rental offices at Faro Airport and in all major resorts. Drivers must hold a full valid driving licence, and a credit card is usually required as a security deposit.
