Olbia

Olbia, is a lively town where ancient history, Sardinian tradition and beautiful Mediterranean scenery come together. Often used as a gateway to the famous Costa Smeralda, Olbia is well worth exploring in its own right, with a charming historic centre, waterfront walks and a wealth of archaeological treasures.

At the heart of the city stands the Basilica of San Simplicio, one of the most important Romanesque buildings in Sardinia. Dating from the 11th and 12th centuries, the granite basilica is dedicated to Olbia’s patron saint and sits on the site of an ancient Roman necropolis. Around 450 Roman-era tombs have been uncovered here, giving visitors a fascinating glimpse into the city’s remarkably long history.

Olbia’s historic centre is perfect for exploring on foot. Corso Umberto I runs through the heart of the town, lined with shops, cafés, restaurants and lively piazzas. Look out for the colourful tiled dome of the Church of San Paolo, before stopping for a coffee or a plate of traditional Sardinian food and watching the world go by.

For a deeper look into Olbia’s past, head to the Archaeological Museum, set on the small island of Peddone beside the old port. Its collection tells the story of the city from the Phoenicians and Greeks through to Roman times, with fascinating finds including ancient ship remains and a remarkable hoard of almost 900 gold coins.

Beyond the historic centre, Olbia opens out towards the sea, with its sheltered gulf and easy access to some of Sardinia’s most beautiful coastal scenery. From here, you can discover golden beaches, crystal-clear waters and the Tavolara Marine Protected Area, or venture further north towards the glamorous Costa Smeralda.
